Being Grasped and Never Abandoned

The term “being grasped and never abandoned” is often used to express the workings of the Amida Buddha, the Buddha of Infinite Light and Life. This term refers to the teaching that we, human beings, are, without exception, embraced by the Amida Buddha and never abandoned by His infinite compassion and wisdom. This is the primary working of the Amida Buddha.

A few weeks ago, I shampooed my pet dog Lily, a black female labrador retriever. After washing her, while I was drying her hair with a blow dryer, I unconsciously started to complain to her about various problems and complications in my human life…. Ah, the lucky life of dogs that don’t have to deal with human issues!

When Lily was about halfway dry, I realized that she is just sitting there, listening to me without any resistance or calculation on her part until I had finished my complaining. After I finished my complaining and with a gentle smile on her face, she licked my face. It was as if she was telling me “everything is okay just as it is” and “don’t worry.” I felt that Lily accepted me, just as I am.

This incident brought me to realize that my ever-loving Lily’s attitude is just like the embodiment of Amida Buddha ’s workings of “being grasped and never abandoned.” She accepted me as I am, just as the Amida Buddha does! This brought a great sense of relief to me. I realized that “being grasped and never abandoned” can be rephrased as “full affirmation” or “full embracement.” Through this realization, I could not help but express my love and appreciation to my Lily for her existence opened this Truth up to me.

When I reflect on my own self, I wonder if I have been able to apply the same attitude toward others? Well, quite simply, the answer is NO. Although I may appear wise and seem like a good listener outwardly, I am actually quite a selfish person. That is, I am quite foolish inwardly and do not truly care about others in the depths of my being. This is my true foolish nature. However, I am grateful that my Lily-chan’s truly loving nature shines upon my dark heart like a wonderful light which is another expression of the Amida Budha’s working.

I am so grateful to have realized the depth of the Amida Buddha’s working through my beloved Lily.
