Today, I would like to explain about Nembutsu. Typically, the word or term "Nembutsu" means to recite the Name of Amida Buddha in gratitude for all that we have been given. Amida Buddha is one of the many Buddhas that was introduced to the world by the teaching of the Shakyamuni Buddha.
The term "Amida" comes from the terms Amitābha or Amitaayus in Sanskrit and means "immeasurable light or immeasurable life." Therefore, Amida Buddha is the Buddha of Immeasurable Light or Life. This could be interpreted as the immeasurable or invisible truth which surrounds us in daily life. Whenever we come to realize even a bit of the teachings or the true reality of this existence we can say "Namo-Amida-Butsu." Namo Amida Butsu can be literally translated as “I take refuge in Amida Buddha”, but it roughly means "I thank Amida Buddha for the teaching us the ultimate reality."
Let’s bring this expression of our gratitude for our wonder life which is NOT a matter of course in our daily life.
